We were pleased to welcome this international delegation at our Chair and are looking forward to the ongoing very good cooperation!
Prof. Schenk visited during his business trip to Brazil three universities which cover the field of metallurgy in academic education and research. During his four day trip in Brazil, he had the chance to meet the professors and the researchers of the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) in Volta Retonda, the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) in Belo Horizonte and the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (UFOP), Ouro Preto. He discussed with the representatives of the universities about possible cooperation in education and research in the common field of metallurgy.
UFOP and Montanuniversitaet Leoben have signed an exchange agreement in 2013 which promotes the exchange of students between both universities. This exchange program is financially supported by Thyssen Krupp Steel Europe (TKSE). Prof. Schenk had the chance to meet the Rector of UFOP, the Director of the Escolal de Minas in UFOP and the Director of human resources of TKSE in Ouro Preto. A topic of this meeting was the extension of the cooperation between the partners in the field of academic education. Principal agreements were made about the possibility to implement a joint master degree program for metallurgy between UFOP and MU Leoben.
Daniel Godinho de Carvalho started to work on his master thesis at the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy during his semester abroad in Leoben 2013. He is now working at TK-CSA and has finished recently theses at home in Brazil. The defense of the thesis was on 7th Aug. 2015 at his home university Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) in Volta Redonda, Brazil. Prof. Johannes Schenk was the second supervisor and one of the examiners of the thesis. The Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy congratulates Daniel to his new academic degree and wishes him all the best for his private and professional future.

Also this summer the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy shared the IAESTE- exchange program for young technical students. It is a possibility for them to gain experience in working life and to establish ties with other students from the whole world. This year Mrs. Haifaa Haddad from Jordan worked at the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy. For 6 weeks she dealt with the behaviour of sulfur in metal-slag systems. We hope that you have met a lot of new friends and collegues and that you have learnt tools and know-how for your further professional life.
My internship for this summer with IAESTE was in Montanuniversitaet Leoben,at the chair of ferrous metallurgy. It was one of the most enjoyable and educational experiences of my life. The project which i was to complete within my six weeks in Leoben with the help of the industrial partners dealt with Distribution of sulfur in hot metals and slags. This experience allowed me to become familiar with practical and laboratory work as well as improving my skills to write scientific reports. Am very grateful for the chance to work with such a nice people.I have done a lot of travelling inside and outside Austria, met some lovely people and will go back to jordan with new skills and unforgettable memories.

On Thursday 9th of July the sixth Metaldays came to an end. 25 students from all over Austria had the chance to get to know the university environment as well as the city of Leoben. During these four days the students visited the different chairs within the Department of Metallurgy and visited the voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH Co&KG and the mining plant Erzberg with a Hauly-cruise across.
The Chair of Metallurgy wants to thank all the sponsoring companies for their generous support as well as the organizing staff for making this event possible.
It happens every four years that one of the largest International Metallurgical Trade Fairs, the METEC, is taking place in Düsseldorf. In addition to this truly impressive exhibition with 78 000 visitors from more than 120 countries, the 2nd ESTAD conference was hold. This conference, held from 15th to 19th of June, was attended by Christian Bernhard, Martina Hanel, Gregor Arth and Philip Bundschuh which were giving presentations about their research topics and further Johannes Schenk was invited to a Round Table Discussion regarding the Future of Iron and Steel Industry.
Altogether it was a great week with plenty of opportunities for interaction with company-partners, learning from the international who's who of iron and steel community and of course for scientific and social networking.
