December 04th, 2014 – Celebrating Saint Barbara's

December 04th, 2014 – Celebrating Saint Barbara's

In order of honoring Saint Barbara as the patron saint of mountain and hut folk, as every year the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy organized a Saint Barbara ceremony. On 4th of December all members of the Chair got together for listening to the story of the life and death of Saint Barbara and furthermore for all that are not aware of it yet, the meaning of the traditional clothing “Bergkittel” was explained. A decorated Christmas tree and candle light atmosphere created a dignified setting and made the Barbarabier tasting even more delicious.

Thanks to Florian Penz for the presentation and special thanks also to Prof. Hiebler for his attendance and contribution for making this ceremony very special.

October 16th, 2014 – Peter Presoly passes doctoral examination with flying colors 1 October 16th, 2014 – Peter Presoly passes doctoral examination with flying colors 2

On October 16th, Peter Presoly passed the doctoral examination with distinction. The examination committee constisted of Prof. Helmut Antrekowitsch (Chair of the commission) and the supervisors of Peters PhD, Prof. Christian Bernhard and Prof. Helmut Clemens.

Peter wrote his excellent thesis on the "Influence of alloying elements on the hypo-peritectic phase transformation in steels". He developed the DSC measurement as a trustworthy method to identify hypo-peritectic steel grades. His results will help to improve the understanding of certain sub-systems in the alloying system Fe-C-Si-Al-Mn and the role of these elements for the peritectic phase transformation much better. He already published parts of his thesis in Metallurgical and materials transactions A 44 (2013) 12, S. 5377 - 5388 and presented them at the 8th ECCC in Graz in June.

Congratulations Peter!

On 26th September, the annual Field Trip of the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy came to an end and all the participants returned with lots of impressions and new experiences. For two weeks, the group travelled through northern Italy as well as Slovenia and parts of Austria (see the Road Map of the trip). The excursion consisted of not only the remarkable visits of renowned steel producers, steel plant engineering and supplying companies, but also a bonus sightseeing trip during the weekend stay at Milan. Nevertheless, the social aspects and fun were not missed out, either at the vineyard for wine tasting or by common enjoyment of the great Italian cuisine.
A report and summary will be available in late autumn.

The Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy thanks all the sponsors for financial supports as well as for assistance in general for making this great journey possible. (Very special thanks to Anton Pichler and Lukas Schmidt for their great organisational efforts).

30. June - 3. July, Metaldays 2014

One of the priority objectives of the Department of Metallurgy is to bring this interesting and special field of research closer to interested and enthusiastic young people with the aim of bringing forward young academics. In summer 2014, from 30. June to 3. July, for the fifth time students from all over Austria had the chance to get to know the university environment as well as the city of Leoben. During these four days the students visited the different chairs within the Department of Metallurgy to learn more about the different fields of research, technical equipment and the field of activity of a metallurgist in general. Beside this there have been different visitations around the topic metallurgy, such as the visitation of the voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH Co&KG and the mining plant Erzberg with a Hauly-cruise across it. After the eventfully and exiting daytime there took place some more comfortable evening events. While sitting together having food and drinks there was the possibility for communication with professors and alumni as well as students from the university.

A statistical evaluation could reveal that more than one third of the participants of all five years are yet registered as students on our university so we are quite convinced of seeing most of the participants again. Altogether the Metaldays have been a great time for all people involved and we are looking forward to the Metaldays 2015. At least the Chair of metallurgy wants to thank all supporters, for financial supports as well as for assistance in general.

After a general introduction into the study program of the Montanuniversitaet, Denise Loder gave a presentation about metallurgy in general, the study program and typical fields of activities for graduated metallurgists. The visitation tour started at the Chair of Nonferrous Metallurgy. After having lunch together they visited the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy, where they rotated between four activity stations: In the lab of reduction metallurgy Anton Pichler introduced the students into the field of primary metallurgy by hearing, seeing and feeling. Bernd Lederhaas gave the students a close insight on metals by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Nadine Tatzreiter showed them the facilities of the metallographic lab. And Alexander Mayerhofer explained them the High Temperature Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope (HT-LSCM) and the Drop Shape Analysis (DSA). Closing the visit at the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy the students visited the melting shop, where Anton Pichler and Stefan Stangl explained them the technical equipment and showed them a thermite reaction, which is used for the aluminothermic welding of rails. On Decembre 16th, Stefan Griesser received his doctoral degree as part of the official graduation ceremony from the University of Wollongong in Australia attended by his father Hubert Griesser.
After finishing his master degree in Leoben, Stefan joined the group of Prof. Rian Dippenaar at UOW as part of a collaborative agreement between Wollongong and our University in 2010. He submitted an outstanding PhD entiteld: "In-Situ Study of the Influence of Alloying Elements on the Kinetics and Mechanism of the Peritectic Phase Transition in Steel". In 2011, the first price in the prestigious Jules Byrne’s Students Presentation Competition was awarded to Stefan.

There would be much to say about Stefan but two sentences of his supervisor Rian Dippenaar might say more than a thousand words:

" .... his work and his thesis were superb, he was a most delightful individual to interact with and he made a huge contribution to our group.
His superb intellect, his vision and innovation and his unquestionable work ethic will stand him in good stead in the future."

There is nothing more to add.

Stefan, many congratulations from our side and enjoy your trip in your motorhome across Australia with your father!
