IAESTE Exchange Program

Also this summer the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy shared the IAESTE- exchange program for young technical students. It is a possibility for them to gain experience in working life and to establish ties with other students from the whole world. This year Emer McDonnell from Ireland worked at the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy. For two months she dealt with the characterization of iron ores in process near conditions and added her knowledge about chemical engineering to write scientific reports. Beside that work she attended our trips to the steel plant of voestalpine, to the Erzberg iron mine and the “Bergausflug”. We hope that you have met a lot of new friends and that you have learnt tools and know-how for your further professional life.

My IAESTE summer placement in Montanunivesitaet Leoben has been an educational and enjoyable experience. The project which I was to complete within my two months in Leoben dealt with characterization of Kalabagh iron ore, this allowed me to become familiar with practical work as well as improving my ability to write scientific reports. I feel that I have learnt a lot of useful skills from my summer here and I’m very grateful for this opportunity. Also for the chance to join trips from the department to voestalpine Stahl Linz, to an iron ore mine and on a hiking trip. I have had a wonderful summer; I have done a lot of travelling, met some lovely people and will go home with some useful new skills for my future studies.

Metaldays 2013

Metaldays 2013 1 Metaldays 2013 1

In summer 2013 from 1.-4. July for the forth time students from all over Austria had the chance to get to know the university environment as well as the city of Leoben. During these four days the students visited the different chairs within the Department of Ferrous Metallurgy to learn more about the different fields of research, technical equipment and the field of activity of a metallurgist in general. Beside this there have been different visitations around the topic metallurgy, such as the visitation of the voestalpine Stahl Donawitz GmbH Co&KG and the mining plant Erzberg with a Hauly-cruise across it. After the eventfully and exiting daytime there took place some more comfortable evening events. While sitting together having food and drinks there was the possibility for communication with professors and alumni as well as students from the university.
Altogether the Metaldays have been a great time for all participants and we would like to thank all financial supporters for making this great event possible.
